Paris on a Budget: Eat Croissants, Skip Tourist Traps
📅 March 24, 2026 | 10 min read
Where to Stay
Skip Right Bank overpriced hotels. Stay in Le Marais (hip, walkable, affordable), Canal Saint-Martin (local vibe), or 13th arrondissement (budget hotels $80-120/night, less touristy). Airbnb studios $60-90/night.
Eating Like a Parisian
Breakfast: Boulangerie croissant + café au lait = €3. Parisians have this at a café counter standing up (€1 cheaper than sitting). Tourists sit at tables and get charged 3x.
Lunch: "Menu du jour" (daily special) at restaurants is €12-18 with starter, main, dessert. Dinner prices are double. Eat lunch as your big meal.
Dinner: Crêpe stand (€5-8) or falafel in Le Marais (€6-8). Pizza slices (€3). Baguette + cheese from Carrefour (€5). Parks have free seating.
Free & Cheap Museums
- First Sunday of each month: Many museums are free (Louvre, Musée d'Orsay, etc.)
- Musée de Montmartre: €8 (tiny, excellent)
- Walking through neighborhoods: La Marais, Montmartre, Canal are free and better than museums
Day Trips (Skipped by Most Tourists)
Versailles is mobbed. Instead: Day trip to Fontainebleau ($15 train, 45min, palace + forest, no crowds). Or Chantilly (château, 30min by train, $10). Same luxury as Versailles, 1/10th the tourists.
Budget Breakdown: 4 Days
- Hotel: €320 (€80/night)
- Meals: €80 (eating local)
- Transport (metro): €20 (1-week pass)
- Museums/attractions: €30
- Total: €450 (~$500)
Pro Tips
Parisians don't do "sightseeing." They sit in cafes, watch people, walk along the Seine. Do the same. 50% of your best memories will be stumbling on a random neighborhood, not seeing the Eiffel Tower from a tour bus.
